Haematopoietic cell transplantation is the intravenous infusion of haematopoietic progenitor cells designed to establish marrow and immune function in patients with a variety of acquired and inherited malignant and non-malignant disorders. These include hematological malignancies (leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma), non-malignant acquired bone marrow disorders (aplastic anaemia), and genetic diseases associated with abnormal haematopoiesis and function (thalassaemia, sickle cell anaemia, and severe combined immunodeficiency). Haematopoietic cell transplantation is also key in the support of patients undergoing high-dose chemotherapy for the treatment of malignant diseases for which hematological toxicity would otherwise limit drug administration (e.g. breast, germ-cell and ovarian cancers).

This is an outstanding reference source on bone marrow transplantation which has become recognised as the bible in the field. The original editor, Donnall Thomas, was a pioneer in the field and won the 1990 Nobel Prize for his discoveries concerning organ and cell transplantation in the treatment of human diseases.

During the past three decades there has been outstanding progress in the area which has led to an exponential increase in the number of transplant recipients worldwide. More than 13,000 new cases of haematopoietic stem cell transplantation per year have been recently reported to the International Bone Marrow Transplant Registry. This considerable increase in number has been paralleled by impressive basic and applied research into the uses of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. There is therefore now a need for a new edition of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation to accumulate this knowledge and convey the most current information available.

The third edition will be divided into eight sections containing over 100 chapters written by international experts in the field of blood and bone marrow transplantation. The text will be completely revised and updated throughout to take account of new and recent developments, from both a scientific and clinical perspective. There are ten completely new chapters.
