Peter Handke published An Ode to the Length of Time in 1986, the same year he published his novel Repetition, one to which this poem is clearly related to.
Lyric and epic, descriptive and philosophical, this long poem explores length of time as something that, unlike the metaphysical notion of eternity, manifests itself as the sudden irruption of something that returns, dragging us through time and giving us a sense that in human life we have a powerful internal element that is also completely unknown.
