Summary

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

One of Brazil's greatest contemporary narrators investigates the hopelessness of our world, through the portrayal of a group of friends who grew up during the turn of the century.

In the middle of an unexpected heat wave and in a Porto Alegre that is paralyzed by a transportation strike, three friends find each other again after almost two decades. At the end of the nineties, together they had created a digital fanzine that became famous throughout Brazil. At that time they shared youth's feeling of immortality and its many unfulfilled promises. Today, they are united only by their sadness over Duque's death, who was shot in the early morning while running through the city, in another senseless case of street violence. He was the group's fourth member, the most brilliant and talented but also the most solitary and inaccessible, transformed in recent years into one of Brazil's new literary voices. The memories of the past will return to sketch out an uncertain portrait of their lost friend and of a group of young people who had to reinvent themselves in the new era of the Internet and social media.

Daniel Galera, one of the most outstanding authors of contemporary Brazilian narrative, offers us a portrait of a generation that, upon passing through millennium’s door, got stuck between the nostalgia of an idealized past and a present filled with anguish and apocalyptic threats.
