Headache medicine is now recognized as an official medical subspecialty. The United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties (UCNS) has accredited fellowship training programs and offers accreditation for individuals who demonstrate expertise in headache medicine. Practitioners who specialize in the field come from many different backgrounds including neurology, internal medicine, anesthesiology, rehabilitation medicine, family medicine, psychiatry, dentistry and others. Due to the great deal of scientific and clinical research being done in this field, it is growing rapidly in every way. Many physicians and other health care providers are developing an interest in the practice of headache medicine, which is fortunate due to the vast numbers of individuals who suffer from headache disorders.
