Summary

The collapse of the soviet union (1991) and restoration of independence of Azerbaijan has influenced the development of literature widely. The socialist regime having removed traditional themes from literary and aesthetic thought and introduced socialist realism had brought deep change to the national literature and the achievement of independence by Azerbaijan has provided a new innovative variety to content, form and creative features of literature.

This anthology covers a wide sample of literary prose during the thirty year period from the 80's to present time, including works by men and women looking forward to a better future, but also some looking back to a time before the Russian or Moslem incursion. Some works are based on traditional stories long thought lost forever, now restored in modern versions of folk-lore.

The assembled works may be classified as literary samples written in documentary-political, social-psychological, satirical and investigative styles.
