This novel provides a thoughtful and engaging account of a girls experience in a German-American internment camp during WWII and then details her experiences encountering racial inequality in the south upon her familys release from the camp. The book is especially strong in drawing the reader into the narrative and Trudys thoughts. Most powerfully, we see how Trudys experiences leading up to internment and while living in the camp shape and form her sense of self and her sense of justice.

A very interesting historical YA read that explores two aspects of Americas history. First, the fact that German-Americans were interned in the U.S. during WWII, and second a look at racism during this time as seen through the eyes of a teen girl.
