Summary

This book is a guide to the buildings of the main campus of the University of Texas at Austin from the oldest to the most recent. Its intent is to heighten awareness of the ways architects and the administrators who commissioned them have envisioned the campus over the course of its history. It is a critical study that argues the character of the campus gains from having architecture that is varied, responsive to site, and helps students, staff, and faculty to feel they are part of a community. It is written for those with ties to the university and for others with a general or more academic interest in campus planning and architecture. Currently developing a master plan by Cesar Pelli, the campus's major attractions include the Main Building, whose prominent tower, designed by Paul Cret, is one of Austin's tallest and most recognizable buildings. UT-Austin is also home to the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library designed by Gordon Bunshaft of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill.
