Across the world universities and cities are discovering each other based on a growing appreciation of shared interests. This has its expression in the emergence of 'civic universities' engaged as whole institutions with city development in the round and linking the city to the global arena. Notwithstanding this trend, a common academic literature that links urban studies with higher education studies has yet to emerge. The University and the City begins the task of filling this gap. While the drivers behind engagement between universities and cities may be global, the precise expression of this emerging relationship is certainly highly contingent on national and local circumstances. This book draws on scenarios from the regional and local context to draw conclusions for city-university relationships worldwide.
