MEAP Test Preparation ABOUT THIS BOOK Our book provides excellent preparation for the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP)-Grade 7 ELA. Inside you will find exercises that are designed to provide students with the instruction, practice, and strategies needed to do well on this achievement test. This book is divided into several parts: A pretest, which is half the length of an actual MEAP test and introduces students to some of the section on the actual test including a revising section, two linked reading passages, a constructed-response item. Following the pretest is a lesson section, which teaches students about the different types of MEAP questions and skills on the reading portion of the test, and a section instructing students on the writing portion of the test. Lastly, this book includes a full-length posttest. Begin by assigning students the pretest. Answers and answer explanations follow the pretest. Then work through each of the lessons one by one. When students have completed the book, they should complete the posttest. Answers and answer explanations follow the posttest. ABOUT THE MEAP The Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) was initiated by the State Board of Education in 1969. Since 2003, the MEAP ELA assessments have reflected the ELA Content Standards and Benchmarks as described in the 1995 Michigan Curriculum Framework. The 1995 standards, however, were written to grade-level clusters and not to any particular grade level. The Fall 2005 MEAP English Language Arts (ELA) assessment has undergone changes to better reflect the requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB), as well as the 2004 Michigan ELA Grade Level Content Expectations (GLCEs). The reading portion of the test now contains: 4 reading passages, 2 of which are linked; passages are narrative and information and poetry may be included; word count of all passages combined should be about 3,500 words. approximately 8 multiple-choice items per text; linked passages should have 8 multiple-choice questions and 5 cross-text multiple-choice items and 1 constructed-response question. The writing portion of the test now contains the following sections: Writing from Knowledge and Experience-Students are given two pages maximum (front and back) for this response, which requires them to write an essay based on a writing prompt. This response must be written in one testing session and will be scored as first-draft writing using a six-point rubric. Students have 45 minutes to complete this portion of the test. Peer Response to a Student Writing Sample-Students will be allowed a one-page maximum response to a direct question, such as a critical response, to a piece of student writing. This is graded using a four-point rubric. Multiple-Choice Items Based on Student Writing Sample-Students will be asked revision and editing questions that refer back to the same student writing sample that is used for the Peer Response. The following standards/benchmarks are tested on MEAP.
