A zone of contacts between different Native American cultures until the arrival of the Europeans, it was disputed by the British and the French in the colonial period and settled by Acadians and French Canadians in the eighteenth century. To this day, it has remained the site of a distinct French-American culture, and its residents have striven to preserve their specificity and unity despite the international boundary.
