A paradigm change occurred when videos depicting the murder of Daniel Pearl and Nick Berg infected the Net and the minds of the millions who dared view the footage. A new peak in horror was indeed attained. The never-found mythological snuff film that secretly exchanges hands for tens of thousands of dollars is no longer plausible; the assumed punters of such fare can watch people die for free. The Internet has seen to that.

You can't un-watch this stuff and you will be forever changed.” An astute warning to the curious posted on an Internet site.An emerging phenomenon of the 90s was the website dedicated to the publication of graphic forensic imagery, scenes of carnage, accident and murder. These sites tend to come and go, some falling victim to hoster problems, others simply a juvenile proposition and quickly falling into ruin. As of writing, Best Gore is one of the few such sites that is in any way slick, with registration required to access anything beyond a few sample pages. It credits itself with being a reality news site and has plenty of warnings on matters of content. The videos and images within, say Best Gore, 'are bloody, gut wrenching, teeth grinding, offensive and upsetting. Just as the life itself'. Two of the first gore sites to appear were Rotten.com in 1996 and Ogrish.com in 1999. Rotten outrageously claimed to get around 15 million hits a day -which is more than the New York Times website- and Ogrish declared a more credible 750,000 hits on a "bad news day”. Indeed, if they are accurate, such numbers testify to the popularity of the shock site, although some hits are evidently a result of misdirection when innocent looking links are mischievously placed on other websites in order to offend the unwary Internet browser.Rotten, with the tag line "Pure evil since 1996”, provides more than just gruesome photographs and bizarre sexual images. Its content includes cerebral articles, editorials and commentary which are often well researched, poignant and amusing. Such is the Daily Rotten -"news you cannot possibly use”- which collates the more out of the ordinary news items and updates them on a daily basis. Ogrish, on the other hand, is more committed to the straight presentation of shocking imagery. "Can you handle life?” was the tag line on the banner depicting a pair of mutilated hands cupping the word Ogrish. It underwent a renovation providing it with a more professional-looking home page (generating one forum comment, "What the hell happened to the original start page of ogrish.com? The new one SUCKS!!!”). When Ogrish changed ownership the site content altered significantly. Indeed, its raison d'etre was lost entirely in that all the gruesome imagery was removed and replaced with inoffensive material.
