Katerina Aifantis obtained her Master's from the University of Cambridge and her PhD from the University of Groningen in 2005 at the age of 21, becoming the youngest PhD holder ever in the Netherlands. In 2008 she was the youngest recipient of the European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grants, for studying the nanomaterials, the research for which is being carried out at the Laboratory of Mechanics and Materials of Aristole University of Thessalaniki. She retains an adunct assistant professorship at the Physics Department of Michigan Technological University. Her research topics range from the mechanical properties of nanocrystals to the electrical stimulation of cells; however, Li battery damage has been her longest research topic.
Stephen A. Hackney is a Professor of the Materials Science and Engineering Department at Michigan Technological University. He has published over 90 papers in the areas of experimental study and interpretation of the physical processes which occur at interfaces and surfaces during phase transformations. He has applied the concepts of materials science to the area of battery electrode behavior for the last 15 years while working with development teams at 3M, Hydro-Quebec and Argonne National Laboratory.
R. Vasant Kumar is a Senior Academic in the Materials Chemistry Group in the Department of Materials Science ® Metallurgy at University of Cambridge and was awarded an Honorary Professorship at Hebei Polytechnic Institute, Tansheng, China. He has over 15 years of research experience in materials chemistry synthesis, devices and electrochemistry and is the author of over 130 papers and hass 8 patents to his name. He is founder and director of EMC Ltd and Solution4Hydrogen Ltd, two start-up companies producing sensing and safety instruments and Green PB Ltd, a spin-off company pioneering an environmentally sound process for the direct recovery of electro-active material in the form of high surface area active precursors from spent electrodes in automotive batteries.
