Eliezer Berkovits (1908-1992) was a leading philosopher, theologian, and talmudic scholar. He studied with Rabbi Yehiel Jacob Weinberg at the Hildesheimer Rabbinical Seminary in Berlin and was for many years professor of philosophy at the Hebrew Theological College in Chicago. In addition to his numerous philosophical writings, including Faith After the Holocaust and God, Man and History, he wrote two major works on halacha: Conditionality in Marriage and Divorce and Halacha: Its Authority and Function, both published in Hebrew by Mosad Harav Kook in Jerusalem. Joseph Isaac Lifshitz is rosh yeshiva of Yeshivat Rabbi Isaac Yehiel and a Senior Fellow in the Institute for Philosophy, Politics, and Religion at the Shalem Center in Jerusalem.
