Summary

Healthy Cities in Europeis about the achievements and the lessons learnt from the Healthy Cities movement in Europe. Healthy Cities is a well-known and successful global WHO initiative, which was launched in Europe fifteen years ago and is regarded as one of the cornerstones of the new public health movement. The continuing success, relevance and appeal of the healthy cities concept to politicians, professionals, NGOs and communities have resulted in a continuing growth of the healthy cities movement in Europe and worldwide. More than 1300 cities are at present involved in 30 national healthy cities networks in Europe. A unique feature of the global movement is the WHO Healthy Cities Network in Europe, which is a network of 50 fully committed cities that worked directly with WHO and provided the ground for innovation, experimentation and precious know-how. Healthy Cities developed over three 5-year phases (1988-1992; 1993-1997; 1998-2002) with each phase focusing on a renewed strategic agenda anddeliverables. A fourth Phase was launched in 2003. This book will cover the experience and the lessons learnt from the implementation of healthy cities across Europe. Main topics include: healthy public policy; partnerships for health and sustainable development; integrated health development planning; equity, vulnerability and exclusion; urban design and transport; participative governance and community empowerment as well as networking and international cooperation.
