Summary
Hate speech prohibitions are increasingly common in the legal systems of liberal societies and stimulate heated debate among defenders of free speech traditions and defenders of the rights of vulnerable groups alike. The literature on hate speech prohibitions is vast but hitherto unconnected in its subject matter, interests, questions and putative answers. This book will take a long-overdue multidisciplinary approach to the subject bringing together legal, political, social and philosophical lines of analysis and argument. More specifically, the book aims to fill the following gaps in the literature. Insufficient work has been done to compare the social and political contexts of hate speech prohibitions in different countries, to consider the similarities and differences that may justify protection for some groups but not others, and the question of how best to regulate hate speech in new forms of media/communication.
