Summary

This book is about the gendered economic impacts of the current global financial crisis. The edited volume, from an international set of contributors, looks at the impacts of the crisis and crisis policies from a gender perspective, through the use of international case studies. Countries covered including India, China, the USA, Mexico, Ecuador, Argentina, Cambodia Mauritius, and Turkey, and the book spans East and Southeast Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, and the Commonwealth of Independent States. Each country case study sheds light on how, within the economic context of each country, women have been affected by the crisis, and on how policy responses have worked in ways that either mitigate the risks they face, or increase their vulnerability Although many books have been published on the financial crisis, this is the first to specifically examine the plight of women in an international perspective. The general perception has been that it has been primarily men's employment that has been affected, whereas this important book shows that this is far from the case.
