About the Authors
Judith F. Robbins, Ph.D serves as the chair of the Early Childhood Education B.S.
Ed. program in the Department of Teaching and Learning, College of Education at Georgia
Southern University in Statesboro, Georgia. She earned her Ph.D. from Florida State
University in Language and Literacy Education and has taught at Georgia Southern since
1991. Dr. Robbins is an associate professor of Early Childhood Education and teaches
courses in the language arts, including the reading, writing and children’s literature methods
courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. She also supervises student
teachers and interns in a number of field-based courses, and works with area schools in
a variety of capacities. She is actively involved in a number of organizations, including
the Eastern Educational Research Association, an affiliate of the American Educational
Research Association, where she serves as chair of Professional Development, Division 9.
Dr. Robbins frequently presents at national and international conferences. 
Julie Garlen Maudlin, Ed.D., is an assistant professor of Early Childhood Education
at Georgia Southern University, in Statesboro, Georgia, where she teaches courses in
P?12 Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment. Dr. Maudlin is a former elementary school
teacher and instructional coach, and is certified as a K?5 educator by the Georgia Professional
Standards Commission. She lives in Southeast Georgia with her husband, Chris,
and their three children. 
Susan T. Franks, Ed.D., is an associate professor of Early Childhood Education and
serves as the chair of the Early Childhood Education M.Ed. program in the Department of
Teaching and Learning, College of Education at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro,
Georgia. She earned her Ed.D. from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University
in Elementary Education with an emphasis in Curriculum and Instruction. Dr. Franks
teaches courses in the language arts, including reading and children’s literature methods
courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels. She also supervises student teachers
and interns in a number of field-based courses and works with classroom teachers in an
ongoing program of consultant work. She is actively involved in a number of organizations
including the Eastern Educational Research Association, an affiliate of the American
Educational Research Association, where she serves as chair of Human Development,
