Destination: Pacific Northwest

High in the Oregon Cascades near a small, isolated lake, the peaks, wrapped in an autumn snow, are blurred by the dusk. As the sun sinks in the west, darkness falls over the dense forest. A wispy fog from the upper basin slips over the lake; the tall firs creak in the wind and to the east, barely visible, three rugged peaks shrug in the distance. Farther away hundreds of tiny lakes like this one await, all empty and quiet in their own seldom explored basins.

Up here you feel yourself connect with nature; you meld with it. Things of the world, below the meadows, canyons, and forests, simply do not exist. The sensation of being alone with nature, of being in the very cup of her hands, is familiar to those who live in the Pacific Northwest. There are certainly more remote areas, but here people seem to have found their niche in the ecosystem and, more or less, are as pleased with their failure to conquer nature as they are with their occasional, temporary successes.

Recreational choices abound in the Pacific Northwest. Raft a river. Hike to the top of a butte you've never climbed before. Or bicycle a road in the baking deserts of eastern Oregon or Washington to see the mirages disappear as you approach them. However you choose to enjoy the landscape, you'll be in good company with the locals, who often seem more interested in day tripping than in day trading.

Climbing and Mountaineering

The mountains of the Pacific Northwest have given many an adventurer quite a challenge. It is no coincidence that many members of the U.S. expedition teams to Mount Everest come from this region.

Fishing

The coastal regions and inland lakes and rivers of the Pacific Northwest are known for excellent fishing. Lodges, many of which are accessible only by seaplane, cater to anglers in search of the ultimate fishing experience. Visiting sportsmen must possess a nonresident license for the state or province in which they plan to fish. Licenses are easily obtainable at sporting-goods stores, bait shops, and other outlets in fishing areas.

Sailboarding

The Columbia River, particularly at Hood River, Oregon, is one of the world's premier locations for windsurfing. Puget Sound and some of the inland lakes in Washington are other venues for the sport. Sailboard rentals and lessons are available from local specialty shops. In British Columbia, the town of Squamish is quickly becoming another major windsurfing destination.

Wildlife Viewing

Sea lions, seals, dolphins, and whales are a few of the marine mammals that can be observed in bays, near headlands, and along the coast. In the spring and summer thousands of gray whales pass by the British Columbia, Washington, and Oregon coasts on their seasonal migration from Alaska to Baja California in Mexico. One of the easiest and most exciting ways to see them is by taking a whale-watching boat excursion. In the forests and along coastal rivers and estuaries deer, bald eagles, herons, and egrets are commonly seen.
