In DawnSong!: The Epic Memory of Askia Toure', Askia M. Toure' uses the landscape of Kemet (Egypt), Kush (Nile Valley), ancient gods and goddesses, historical events, heroes, and queens as subject symbols, icons, or metaphors to establish a whole new language of verse. DawnSong! is poetry grounded in Blacks peoples' aesthetic, spiritual, mythological, and literary culture. The poems in this seminal collection continue the messages of Kemetic history and mythology. DawnSong! attempts to conjure up the spirits of the ancestors and it is to these spirits that Toure' gives voice.
