Consumer Health: Traditional, Complementary and Alternative Health Practices addresses topics traditionally found in a consumer health text (e.g., holistic health, consumer health issues, scientific method/research, advertising and other marketing practices, fraud and quackery, health insurance, consumer protection) but its primary focus is on complementary, alternative medicine (CAM), integrative medicine, multicultural folk medicine, and self-care practices. Therapies used to complement traditional medical therapies are identified as complementary to Western medical practices (e.g., use of aromatherapy after surgery) and those used as an alternative (e.g., use of special diet for cancer rather than surgery or chemotherapy). The goal is to arm students with the skills needed to make educated choices regarding health products and services.
