As the social landscape of the contemporary United States continues to evolve, developing youth are faced with ever changing challenges in their search for self and meaning. A great variety of factors have influenced-or at least co-occurred with-the circumstances that contemporary youth are being required to navigate as they make a place for themselves. These include global patterns such as political and economic reconfiguring and changing distributions of power, as well as local changes such as the recent surge in immigration from Latin Americ... MOREan countries. These patterns have made salient in the United States, and perhaps elsewhere, splintering factions of social, cultural and political interest where before there may have been some degree of convergence. For example, with the breaking up of the former Soviet Union, new waves of political loyalties and cultural affiliations have become salient both in the constituent countries and among immigrant communities in the United States. At the same time, divisions that have historically been problematic to the functioning of our society, such as the long-standing tensions between the black and white racial populations, continue to be problematic in new and different ways. This book takes a close look at how the socio-political context of the late 20th century may have impacted on the fabric of American life, includes research examining how youth living in a diverse American society negotiate a sense of self in the context of their membership in groups defined by various social categories. Although we place race, ethnicity, and gender at the center of this analysis, we also address religion and spirituality, social class, political affiliation, and the intersections among these identity groups. We see these groupings and the discourses around them as salient contexts of development for today's diverse American youth.In this book, we place adolescent development in time and place (end of 20th century, US). In the United States at the end of the 20th century, there were few formal institutions other than schools that provided a place for meaningful and productive roles for adolescents. This created a mismatch between the adolescents' views of their potential and maturity and the roles they were allowed to occupy. Adolescence is marked in many traditional cultures with rites of passage demarcating the transition from childhood to well-specified adult roles. This is not so true in western, industrialized societies in which adolescence extends as long as 15 to 20 years. We discuss the central issues of successful development in the United States in light of these characteristics of our society. We pay particular attention to the diversity and complexity of our society, the variety of value systems available to youth, the lack of clarity about the future labor market, and the variety of different and sometimes conflicting groups and settings in which adolescents participate. In discussing these issues, we attempt to weave a narrative around identity as the key in adolescents' experiences. We approach identity as both a motivational force and a reservoir of resources that enables youth to find their way as they progress through their lives.Organization of the book. The primary objective of this book is to tell the racial and ethnic identity stories-in both our own voices and those of mostly black and white youth growing up through the 1990s and into the early 21st century. We begin the book by providing a backdrop against which these stories take form, describing the current social, cultural, and political climates. We close with reflections on the theortical paradigms discussed and their implications for youth development in contemporary and future conditions, and implications for U.S. policy and practice regarding race, ethnicity, and gender.
