Salvo de Benedittis nunca podrá olvidar el día en que, estando de vacaciones en la casa de la playa, unos hombres aparecieron para llevarse a su padre a quien no ha vuelto a ver. Casi siete años después, a punto de cumplir los doce años, cuando ha conseguido tener una vida feliz con sus tíos y su primo en otra ciudad y destacar en el colegio por su inteligencia y su pasión por la lectura, su padre se presenta para llevárselo unos días con él. Ya no siente nada por su padre, que es prácticamente un desconocido, excepto el rencor por el sufrimiento que su ausencia causó en su madre y que acabó con su vida. Obligado a compartir unos días con él en contra de su voluntad, Salvo tratará de recomponer las piezas de ese rompecabezas en que se ha convertido la vida de su padre y, además, de ese viaje que emprenden juntos hacia el sur de Italia, que se convierte también en un viaje de descubrimiento mutuo.

Salvo de Benedittis will never be able to forget the day when, while on vacation at the beach house, some men appeared and took his father whom he never saw again. Almost seven years later, about to turn twelve, when he has managed to have a happy life with his uncles and his cousin in another city and make a name for himself at school with his intelligence and his passion for reading, his father shows up to take him away to spend a few days with him. He no longer feels anything for his father, who is practically a stranger, except the resentment for the suffering that his absence caused his mother and that ended her life. Forced to spend a few days with him against his will, Salvo will try to put together the pieces of the puzzle that his father's life has become and, furthermore, of the journey they undertake together to southern Italy, which also becomes a journey of mutual discovery.
