Summary

+This book introduces students to the historical context in which different subject areas of psychology (e.g. Developmental psychology, Clinical psychology etc.) were developed. and also looks at how contemporary philosophers approach the philosophical topics relevant to these areas of psychology (i.e. to tease out the philosophical implications from subjects areas of psychology), in addition to describing the philosophical bases from which different subject areas of psychology have emerged. The philosophical approach in this book is mainly orientated towards classical philosophy, taught by most university departments of philosophy in the U.K. The book also incorporates some fundamental Eastern ideas and history, though Western psychology is the main focus of the book. In the present book, readers will read just as much history of psychology as philosophy of psychology. Furthermore, the philosophical ideas are not only described for the purpose of tracing the ideas which preceded the formation of modern psychology, but also they are described in some depth in terms of philosophical implications that contemporary philosophers would address. In other words, the present book will address philosophical ideas which have not been covered in the previous books on the history of psychology. The present book is also distinctively different from existing publications on the history of psychology in that the Eastern perspective will also be incorporated. This perspective is by and large ignored in the other publications.
