Summary

A historical novel about the power and destiny of the forces of nature.

A startling earthquake shakes Lisbon on November 1, 1755, on All Saints' Day. For several days after that, massive fires spread throughout the city destroying everything in its path. While authorities try to put all chaos in order, a pirate and a nun escape from justice, an English captain tries to recover his money, and a child looks for his sister under the rubble.

In the midst of all the misery and despair that devastates the capital of the Portuguese empire, the personal stories of that small group of people will cross and all of them will question whether the tragedy has been divine punishment or a tragic coincidence that will change their lives forever.
