This book came about as an attempt to provide an answer to the question that is often put to the author (and other professors and expert school practitioners): "how can we talk to students in ways that sustain their attention, motivation, and investment?" This question gets at one of the most difficult aspects of working with children in a K-12 school setting- engaging with the students and keeping their attention long enough to effect change, namely the importance of student involvement. This book emphasizes change-promoting aspects of student interviewing with a solution-focused approach to working with children and adolescents, providing step-by-step guidelines for engaging with students in solution-building from the first moments of contact. It pays careful attention to developmental differences in age groups, providing age-specific interventions, strategies, and general approaches to working with students in a positive and supportive manner.
