Eireann Corrigan, who grew up in Piscataway, NJ, started writing poems at the age of seven. “My brother went to high school in Germany and I used to write little poems for him.” Corrigan explains. “In fifth grade, I copied my poems into a diary.” She went to Sarah Lawrence College and completed her Master of Fine Arts degree at New York University. She also studied with some of the finest U.S. poets, including Marie Howe and Sharon Olds. Corrigan published her thesis as the memoir, You Remind Me of You, which was published by Scholastic’s PUSH imprint. She then published Splintering, a powerful novel about a family that is shattered by a random act of violence – and must deal with what is discovered underneath. In this book, Corrigan wanted to see what happens after such a traumatic experience, how "the knots of people someone decided to unravel knit themselves together again.” Splintering was named an ALA Best Book for Young Adults. Currently, Corrigan is teaching at Rutgers Prep in New Jersey. She intended a full-time career in writing but received a call from the school's headmaster asking her to consider a position as an English teacher. In 2004 a winner of the NJ Star Ledger newspaper’s Scholarship Program designated Corrigan as her most influential teacher.
