This book seeks to understand how children in third, seventh, and eleventh grades in the United States and other countries made meaning of the historic election of Barack Obama as President of the United States. The book is developed from an international research study exploring how Obama's empowering messages were received and understood by children and youth throughout the world in the months following his inauguration. Responses were collected from students throughout the United States and in China, Russia, Jamaica, and Sierra Leone (West Africa). In answering open-ended questions, students described their feelings about the impact that this first African American president of the United States has had on them personally and on their country. Third grade students in the United States and some students overseas also contributed vibrant drawings of "What President Obama means to me." The rich contents of the book, the issues it raises, and the insights it provides will offer readers a unique set of lenses to look into the minds of the future generation around the world.
