The volume will consist of about 30 original chapters covering the major contemporary developments within the broad and interdisciplinary field of cosmopolitan studies.The handbook presents a comprehensive and critical overview of the cosmopolitanism in the humanities and in the social sciences.A key theme in the volume is that cosmopolitanism is a not an abstract or utopian idea but is embodied in different ways in a variety of social, cultural and political forms, as well as in a variety of different historical contexts. Under four headings, it will cover the most important current theoretical debates and reinterpretations of the classical legacy, the cultural and social dimensions of cosmopolitanism, the politics of cosmopolitanism, and finally an important section on non-western expressions of cosmopolitanism.The volume will demonstrate the importance of cosmopolitanism as a field of study that is distinct from related topics such as globalization and transnationalism.ã
