Smith is Emeritus Professor of Nationalism and Ethnicity at the London School of Economics, President of the Association for the Study of Ethnicty and Nationalism (ASEN), and Chief Editor of its journal, ations and Nationalism. He is the originator of an ethno-symbolic approach to nations an nationalism, and the founder of the academic study of nationalism in Britain.
