All states require public school teachers to be licensed, as well as tested for basic skills competency and subject matter proficiency. The Praxis Series from ETS is the exam of choice. It is divided into three segments, corresponding to three stages in teacher development: Praxis I Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST): admission to teacher training programs (required by 31 states) Praxis II Subject Assessments (required by 40 states) and Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) (required by 21 states): licensure for entering the profession and for teaching specific subjects Praxis III Classroom Performance Assessments: first year of teaching. The PPST exam is given in two formats: computer based (by appointment at designated test-centers) or paper-based (approx. every other month at the test centers).
