Summary

A fantastical story of endurance, defiance and hope—also known by the title The Star Rover

Darrell Standing is serving life imprisonment in San Quentin State Prison for murder. Brutalized and straitjacketed, he is left in the dark in solitary confinement for prolonged periods of time. In despair and on the verge of giving up on life, he stumbles upon an incredible way of coping with the torture—by forcing himself into a trance and learning astral projection. Darrell relates his experiences of these trances, that allow him to experience past lives and different worlds, as wanderings through the stars. In his imagination, he drives horse-drawn wagons through crimson dust with Mormons in the mid-west, is the sole survivor of a shipwreck in Polynesia in the 16th century, and a becomes bloodthirsty Danish mercenary who meets Pilate in Jerusalem at the time of Christ. Framing the wild tales of his experiences in the trances are Darrell’s profound and moving memoirs as he serves his sentence, goes through five years in solitary confinement, and ends up a broken man. Gripping at its core, this book thus also offers a fresh perspective on the criminal justice system, and punishment versus rehabilitation.
