John Freely was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1926. He earned his Ph.D. from New York University and completed his postdoctoral studies at Oxford, and is currently a professor at Bosphorus University in Istanbul. He has written more than forty books, many of them about Turkey, including Istanbul: The Imperial City.
