Undoubtedly one of the prettiest villages in the Faroes, the tiny settlement of Mykines is wonderfully photogenic: brightly painted wooden houses, interspersed with traditional tarred and turf-roofed structures, huddle together either side of a mountain stream which trickles down between them from the hillsides behind. There are no roads here, just a couple of footpaths, which wind among the houses and up to the 19th-century church at the top of the village, whose graveyard is overrun with shoulder-high wild angelica. Built of sturdy white stone walls and topped with an unruly grass roof, the church is still used for services by the islanders, though the priest from Vágar does manage to make it over to the island twice a year to a add a bit of authenticity.
