Dr. Bob Nathanson is Associate Professor of Teaching & Learning at Long Island University-Brooklyn Campus where he has also taught in the departments of Physical Therapy and Psychology since 1976.   He has taught and advised hundreds of student-athletes during his tenure, and has also taught freshman orientation seminar and summer pre-college orientation courses for over 20 years. In 1993, Prof. Nathanson was awarded the David Newton Award for Excellence in Teaching, the University’s highest teaching honor. 

He has served on the University’s Intercollegiate Athletics Council (IAC) since its inception in 1996.  The IAC reviews virtually all aspects of the athletics program with special regard for student-athlete welfare.  As a result of such careful oversight, in 2001 LIU was honored as one of nine schools to receive the inaugural USA Today/NCAA Foundation Academic Achievement Award for excellence among student-athletes.  LIU was selected for having the highest student-athlete graduation rate above the average of the general student body among Division I institutions from 1994-2000.  In 2002, LIU was a repeat winner. On May 4, 2005, Prof. Nathanson was one of two faculty members honored by the LIU Department of Athletics in recognition of his “tremendous support and dedication to our student-athletes and Long Island University Athletics.” 

Prof. Nathanson is President of the Institute for Academic Success of College Athletes (IASCA), a newly-formed not-for-profit corporation whose mission is to enhance the ‘student’ side of the ‘student-athlete’ role.  Dr. Nathanson is also a member of the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics.

An Adjunct Professor of Sociology and Social Work at Long Island University, Brooklyn Campus and an Adjunct Professor in the Sociology & Criminal Justice Department at Saint Francis College in Brooklyn, N.Y., Arthur Kimmel is co-editor of Basketball: History, Culture, Business, Sport (M.E. Sharpe, forthcoming).  His research and teaching interests include the Sociology of Sports, Popular Culture, Mass Communications, and Diversity.  In 2004 he, along with Professors Bob Nathanson and Jeff Lambert founded the Institute for Academic Success of College Athletes, a non-profit organization created to identify, develop, and implement strategies to enhance the academic performance of college athletes.

In addition to over two decades of teaching at the university level, Professor Kimmel spent 12 years working in the advertising industry as a copywriter, copy supervisor, and Associate Creative Director at major agencies including NW Ayer and Ogilvy & Mather Direct.

A life-long sports fan and participant, Kimmel has coached youth and high school basketball for more than 12 years, and has coached and refereed soccer for over 15 years.  In addition, he holds a third degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do.  Students he has taught, trained, and coached have won dozens of tournament championships in both forms and free fighting at prestigious competitions.  He, himself, is a trophy-winning competitor and remains active on the tournament scene as a respected judge and referee.
