Summary

The theme of this book is the proper use of a coaching style as a way of interacting with colleagues, managing direct-reports, helping others solve problems, respond to change, make effective choices and develop professionally. The content draws from four evidence-based models for interacting with others and facilitating change: solution-focused therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, and transactional analysis. However, the use of these models and the methods are reframed so that they are congruent with managerial and leadership terminology and provide a practical set of methods and tools for today's healthcare leader. Existing books on coaching are mostly written for the "professional" coach. Fewer are written for a managerial or leadership population, and almost none are written specifically for physician and non-physician leaders in the healthcare environment - and those that are do not teach the methodology explained in this book. This book will introduce its readers to a unique and practical method of coaching using primarily solution-focused principles. The author has created this innovative model and has taught hundreds of physician leaders and professional coaches - its practicality. Additionally, the coaching approach will be shown to be a style which can be used in day-to-day interactions to increase one's overall interpersonal and peer-based leadership effectiveness even if it is not being used in a developmental conversation with a specific individual.
