The terrors of the Somme have largely come to embody trench warfare on the Western Front in modern imagination, but this new book looks beyond the horrendous conditions and staggering casualty rates to provide new, insightful research on one of the most pivotal battles of the war.

Dr. Matthias Strohn, a lecturer at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and a senior research fellow at the University of Buckingham, is an expert on 20th century European military history. He holds a commission in the German army and is a member of the military attaché reserve.

Sir Hew Strachan is Oxford University's Chichele Professor of war history and serves on the Chief of the Defence Staff's Strategic Advisory Panel. His military history works include The First World War: to Arms.
